Along the river bank was a husky training camp. The little pup (to the right of the trainer) is about 10 weeks old andis being taught to jump over those logs without wondering about what's on the other side.

Is that a useful skill for a dog to have?

Evidently yes for an Alaskan huskie. It appears there is a natural instinct for dogs (maybe all animals) to not jump into something they haven't visually checked out. But these trainers try to breed that out of these dogs because they won't always have a clear view of where they are running (if you're not the lead dog, the view never changes) and they need to just run, jump as necessary, run, etc without letting the 'natural' instinct interfere with it.
