So, here's how it works: garbage trucks drive in to the building, dump their contents into a huge pit with a giant bulldozer. The bulldozer drives back and forth both crushing the garbage and pushing it through a grated floor where it is loaded into long-haul semi trucks for the drive out to Livermore. Apparently these larger trucks hold 3-4 garbage trucks' worth of garbage, so they save some gas there.
