Just looked up "Stupa" and learned it literally means "heap" ... from the Sanskrit .. I assume it is a temple, but certainly a strange name

Yep, it's essentially an earthen mound. No inside to see. Somewhat basic but it's also over 2000 years old. Apparently it contains enough masonry to build a town for 25,000 inhabitants.
