Snowboarding day 3 at Mammoth (I forgot to bring my camera for day 2, but Monica brought hers so many pictures will emerge later for day 2). On day 2, we covered a lot of ground and explored much of the mountain but far from all of it. On day 3, Monica and I set out to explore an area of the mountain known for active volcanic features like fumeroles and steam vents. Actually, just a few weeks ago, a woman in her forties and a mother of two was asphyxiated by carbon dioxide from a volcanic vent when she fell into a tree well (where the heavy gas tends to collect) and couldn't get out. They had signs everywhere to stay on the trail and ski in control. Still, it was a little spooky, especially because at 10,000 feet you don't know if your shortness of breath is from the elevation or toxic gas.
