When I had first entered the water, I took out my camera for a test picture or two, and was horrified to hear my camera chime its universal error alarm, usually meaning the card was full or couldn't be read, or the battery was dead, or worse yet it had detected a water leak. Because of the bright sunlight and the nature of snorkeling goggles, I couldn't read the error message and retreated to the beach to see what the problem was. But then the camera mysteriously started working again. I took a few pictures and put the camera through its paces to just to make sure, and relieved, though a bit unsettled, I headed back to the water. I guess if I really get serious about photography, I'll need to always travel with a backup camera.
