Texas doesn't really have freeze-thaw, but we do have something (heavy rains, I believe) that cause the ground under the road to wash out, and then the roadway cracks under its own weight. These cracks are terrifying on a bike, cause if your tire went in one (which it could easily do, given the relative sizes), you'd be falling down mighty fast.
