So, having eaten lunch on the summit, or rather the summit of the unnamed sub-peak that I climbed, I decided to take out my cell phone to see if I could leave a message with my emergency contacts to let them know I was still alive and doing well. Amazingly, I had a single bar of service, and my phone downloaded 50 emails, a voicemail and a text message from David Kanter that said "How was Whitney", then it gave up on service and I couldn't get a message back out. Perhaps a cloud shifted in the sky? It was surprising, but nothing urgent since I didn't plan to have any service on the trip. Then having approached the peak on its northern face I worked my way down the southern flank directly toward the highest of the Marie Lakes, with the great scenery before me coming into sharper focus: small glaciers breaking up as they became part of the lake that they fed and dark volcanic mountain tops.
