So I went on this epic multi-day quest to eat crunchy-rice with curry. Apparently in Cambodia, a supposedly popular meal is made from taking the burnt crusty rice from the rice cooker, drying it in the sun, and then using it as a "bread" of sorts to dip in various curries. My first attempt led me to a neighborhood on the south edge of town near the Bayon Hospital and the southern bridge across the Tonle Sap in which there were no crunchy rice restaurants, however many Cambodian restaurants. I ended up wandering into one and eating dinner with a group of workers at a textile factory south of town. They said they made about $60/month, which Helena tells me is a very good salary for Cambodia. And then they insisted on treating me to the snake and vegetable soup they let me share. Sigh.
