They don't really give a reason for asking for the money; in fact sometimes they ask after you have already given them something or done a favor. In addition to Dirhams, kids also ask for bon-bons, caddeaux, or stylo. I actually really badly wish I had brought several boxes of pens with me, since pens seem to be in short supply for schoolchildren in the countryside. So, if you're planning a trip to the Berber country of Morocco, bring lots of pens to give out.
