  • The sugar mills and plantations were largely owned by US companies. So when seized by Castro it was also about the same time the embargo was established. Russia bought their sugar until 1991. At that time there was a world wide glut of sugar. So Cuba had to direct the farmers to cut back on growing sugar. For what ever reasons - they have yet to produce substitute crops to make up for the economic loss of sugar.
