  • We later learned that tourist "gifts" are very important. If you have a relative in Miami (and thousands do) - and they were to gift you (not a donation - as donations have to go to the state) $ 100 a month - you become a rich person. The standard Cuban monthly wage - farmer or professor - is approx $ 19/month (they do get free education, medical and housing). Every Miami visitor brings bags of stuff - clothes, medical supplies, diapers - you name it.
