Some interesting rocks as we continue back to the desert. This road was called Desert to the Big Pines Highway ... a pretty grandiose name for something barely paved. State Road 288. They mainly show the paved parts at http://www.aaroads.com/guide.php?page=s0288az

  • It is my theory that the state paved the more difficult parts so that trucks could go to Young in all weather. The highway once went the whole 72 miles - but they discontinued the road beyond Young - and it became a Forest Service road. It is really strange to be bumping along a dirt road and suddenly find yourself on a fully paved - well maintained - wide road - with stripes. Then in a few miles go back to hard pack.
