Flying buttresses were installed when it looked like the weight of the dome was pushing the walls out .... not sure when.

  • The dome has been rebuilt / replaced 4 times due to earthquakes. The buttresses were added about 1317. Hagia Sophia was a christian church for 900 years before being converted to a mosque in 1453. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hagia_Sophia
