These are all in the harem, which actually was a pretty good spot for a young woman to wind up. She received an education and training in all the fine arts. She either became a wife (one of four), or a concumbine (one of many) to the sultan, though in most cases she was overlooked. In which case the sultan's mother, who oversaw the harem, arranged a marriage to a suitable partner. Since many of the girls brought to the harem were born salves, or to impoverished families, it was an invitation to a better life.
