Ah, the upwind leg that broke my heart. We were well ahead of 15 at the mark, but the main sheet had broken and we were scrambling.

  • Yeah, the main attaches to the end of the boom, goes through a block attached to the deck at the stern of the boat, back to the boom, through the boom to mid-boat, down to a block on a post in the middle, and into my hand. The block on the stern was attached with, on this boat, a small, theoretically strong, piece of line. That line snapped. I went from a 3-to-1 purchase (loading at boom end and middle) to a 1-to-1, only at the middle. In the wind we were in, that basically meant going from hard-to-sheet-in to impossible-to-sheet-in.
