We saw several rocks that had these star-shaped scars in them. It looked like something that could happen from the explosives they use to clear boulders, but I didn't see any with the typical drill holes that are also normally common... Any other ideas?

Looks like blasting. Hole usually has the dynamite in it so if it worked the hole usually gets destroyed.

Yeah, but I've often seen the hole away from the actual blast -- where they have drilled to put the explosive. The rocks have half-circular tunnels in them.
