Unfortunately for the early citizens of Chicago, there was a problme: with river water naturally flowing towards the lake, either the city-folk had to stop dumping their sewage into the river, or they had to deal with dirty drinking water. Instead, they changed the direction of flow of the river and sent their sewage to St. Louis. Locks still exist at the mouth of the river.
