One last look into a kiva, which has a fire pit (large stone-surrounded circle, a deflector (the screen behind it), a ventilation hole (behind the screen) and pillars that held the roof, made of twigs, branches, and adobe mud with an hole to enter from above (and let the smoke out. The small round hole to the left of the fire pit is a shipapu which these peoples believe is how they came to live on the earth, coming up through the ground.
