The circular holes are thought to be ceremonial - maybe religious places - called Kivas. We refer to our outdoor fire structures as Kivas. Their Kivas were probably covered and had a smoke and a ladder vent or hole in the roof. A tunnel came in near the floor - which was exactly placed to get the prevailing air currents.
