This is Newspaper Rock on the road into the Needles section of Canyonlands, and very near the Indian Creek Recreation Area. The 200-square-foot (19 m2) rock is a part of the vertical Wingate sandstone cliffs that enclose the upper end of Indian Creek Canyon, and is covered by hundreds of ancient Indian petroglyphs (rock carvings)—one of the largest, best preserved and easily accessed groups in the Southwest. The petroglyphs have a mixture of human, animal, material and abstract forms, and to date no-one has been able to fully interpret their meaning. Above according to Wikipedia. "They say" some are over 2000 years old. I say: how do they know?

  • Pretty neat. Monica and I are slapping ourselves for not stopping to see this (I don't think we knew what it was, other than the name. Thought it was maybe a rock with an open book or corner to it.

  • Haha. Interesting take. I like that some of the feet appear to have 6 toes. Mistake or evidence of genetic variation?
