When aid climbing, using gear and ropes to make upward progress is OK and is the name of the game. Here my partner jeff jumars or ascends a rope using mechanical ascenders and etriers (the rope ladders that he has his feet in). I had previously led this pitch (free, mostly) and Jeff is following it by ascending the line to save time/energy.
