Interesting formation in the middle there. I was curious why these formed (I assume a harder material existed there than surrounding it, but why did such a small little patch of material form in the first place?).

  • Ah the mysteries of nature. But don't you mean a softer material than the surrounding?

  • The existing thing is made of material harder than whatever used to be there. Poor phrasing on my part.

  • It's like a water gap

  • What is a water gap?

    — Catherine Hovell

  • The "Delaware Water Gap" ... the only one I've ever heard of, is where the Delaware River cuts through the ? Mountains on the PA / NJ border. But it's BIG.

  • It's when a mountain ridge forms slowly over time (orogeny), but a preexisting river keeps cutting through the mountains as they form, effectively bisecting the mountain range.
