What's the rock made of? Sandstone? That wouldn't be good for climbing. Certainly doesn't look like Yosemite.

It's actually granite! From the Wikipedia page on Joshua Tree NP: "quartz monzonite, a very rough type of granite made even more so as there is no snow or ice to polish it as in places like Yosemite." It's a very high-friction rock but not as strong as the glacially-carved Yosemite or eroded high Sierra.
