The Nisqually River bed snakes down the canyon; the river itself is very small within that. There was a massive flood in 2006 [ http://www.nps.gov/mora/parknews/images-of-the-flood-of-2006.htm ] that likely widened the valley and definitely left a lot of downed trees.
