John - at least when coming from Tucson and Phoenix, the plane goes so, so, so close to Rainier it's insane. I'm not sure what the AUS or SFO flights do.

Yeah, you can clearly see the summit crater. According to that NY Times article, it's a record year for snowfall and low turnout for mountain climbers.

I might have changed my mind. That might be the Tahoma glacier (more on the SW side).

Based on the time of day and the shadows I would say that's definitely SW or W facing.

In this, I think the main ridge from the summit just right of center in this photo is the Success Cleaver, with the South Tahoma Glacier next to it and the Tahoma Glacier beyond that. Point Success is a point of interest at the top of that rocky area.
