Part of the mausoleum grounds were devoted to an exhibit showcasing other efforts the government was making to protect or restore various monuments. This one caught my eye: a traffic light for rivers, in a sense. The way it was explained, this system of locks could allow boats on a canal to cross a river at a different height. While water most certainly can flow right to left on the river, I'm not sure if there is a configuration to allow boats through in that direction.

  • Very interesting. We saw a lock working on part of the Erie Canal couple years ago ... fascinating stuff.
