We took turns tending the fire throughout the night, which tended to burn big and fast, forcing us to cower, many feet from the fire, and then inch in as the flames subsided. And at every point, our side facing the fire was close to painfully hot which we endured to make up for our backside which was nearly frozen, forcing us at times to perform lazy horizontal pirouettes like a chicken on a rotisserie. All in all, not a restful evening, but one that would have been inordinately less pleasant without a fire.
