The upshot was that we made what we hoped was a second conservative and safe choice in stopping all efforts for the evening to get back to camp, building a fire, and agreeing to bivy in the woods without our gear. Luckily, were were lost in a swampy bog of mostly downed dry wood so building a fire was a snap and we were instantly in better spirits, despite possessing very little water and even less food.

  • Oh, I forgot to mention. So Joel convinced me that my water filter would be extra weight so we did not carry one. We did have chlorine tablets (which take 4 hours to activate) so by morning we had safe though less than pleasant water to drink.
