Joel and I made camp at Charlotte Lake (10,500 ft) and woke up very early the next morning (4am?). It was so dark and so cold, we just couldn't convince ourselves to get moving. We waited until at least 5am before moving and we were still on the trail before first light, guided only by headlamps. We reached the remains of an old drifter fence shortly after daybreak.

What is a drifter fence - and who would have built it?

Drifter fence, or drift fence. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drift_fence . Back before this was a national park there were ranchers using this land. Since it's not near any maintained park trail, guess the park never bothered to have it dismantled. It's weird what is left in national parks: abandoned mines, houses, vehicles, equipment. Too bad the parks are so underfunded they can't be bothered to restore their own lands.
