Was the water really that cold, or was it just cause you were so deep / in for so long that you wanted wet suits?

Surface temp was 78F. About 10-15 feet down there was a thermocline that dropped the temperature about 10 degrees and farther down (60 feet?) it was colder still. So I guess to answer your question, both?
