Next up was a rather complicated maneuver: a guided rappel. We took advantage of this natural port hole to belay Joel down into a deep and dark pot hole. The plan was the belay me down next to get on Joel's shoulders and try to escape the pothole. But perhaps this gave Joel sufficient motivation and he escaped it on his own.

Who knew there was a website called Canyon Wiki? Probably explains it better than I can: http://www.canyonwiki.com/wiki/index.php/Canyon_rappel (scroll toward the bottom) but basically it is a rappel with a top AND bottom anchor that covers some horizontal distance as well, usually to avoid an obstacle. This one ended up being almost entirely horizontal which is why I later called it a Tyrolean traverse.
