In its heyday, Bodie had 10,000 residents, a gridded street system with its own Chinatown and Masonic and Odd Fellow societies. There were six mills mining and processing silver and gold. The final nail in the coffin for Bodie was the Non Essential Mineral and Mining Act during World War II which essentially made it illegal to devote mining resources to facilities that could not directly support the war effort.

  • Support the "mining" effort, or the war effort?

  • Corrected! Thanks :)

  • There is something very "painterly" about this photo. The lowering clouds, the light timbers on the upper part of the building . the softness of the grasses. Very well composed and lit.

  • The town struck me as extremely peaceful, maybe because of the rolling green hills and soft light, which is ironic because 125 years ago it was anything but - a wretched hive of scum and villany. Thanks for the compliment!
