I went looking for one of these on E-Rock last month, and couldn't find one. Is there a reference list of where (and on what mounts) they are placed?

I don't know if the USGS compiles a public list. There are certainly a lot - this website claims to have recorded about three quarters of a million benchmarks. http://www.geocaching.com/mark/default.aspx They are labeled on USGS quad maps so you could collect them all and count them up! :)
