One of the unexpected highlights of the day was the ethnographic museum in Belgrade. I found myself standing outside it when it started to rain, so I thought I'd stick my head in to stay dry. Yugoslavs, as late as the beginning of the 20th century wore elaborate wool and hemp clothing which could tell a fellow countryman what village and region they were from, what position in society they held, as well as whether they were married, etc etc. I found the costumes to have a peculiar and surprising similarity to some Native American dress. Furthermore, many of the tree-branch-and-log constructed triangular homes (again used up until the early 20th century) they had on display looked very similar to those conical animal-skin covered log premises used extensively by the American Indians of the Great Plains.
