A lot of smaller boulders had these ferns growing all around the perimeter. I thought they were neat little plants, and found it odd they didn't seem to exist anywhere else away from the rocks.

I would think some combo of water puddling around the base of the rock (running down the sides of the rock) and possibly some mineral content of the rock as well, created the ideal conditions for this growth. I agree ...they are darling little ferns.

Perhaps also the shade the rock might provide during some part of the day? I didn't notice if they were only on the north side, for instance, though I'm thinking they pretty much went all the way around.
