Monica stands by the mighty Merced River as it races by. El Nino meant lots of rain and snow and therefore especially high-flowing rivers like this one. Our friends had tried to hike an ordinary trail but had to turn back after just two miles, having already forded a waist-deep stream and finally getting stuck in snowdrifts.
